As you think about your 2020 big dream and about where you want to see yourself and your team, don’t ignore or underestimate what, where, and who will contribute most to your “happiness” in this future state. One of the great divides in most humans lives is around what they believe will make them happy. We are consistently “irrational” in our thinking around this topic. We “overvalue” the title, the position, the $, and undervalue those areas where we can’t clearly attach a dollar value. Huh…
Let that sink in.
Now tell me about your big dream for the little one’s in your life. AND, tell me how you are clearing your calendar and your work schedule so they remain at the top of the totem pole. Now, show me your crackberry and where they are scheduled into your daily life.
Are you in need of an “alignment?”
My biggest dreams are around my relationships with my Miss, my God, and my son Taylor. I have dreams for our other children, for myself, and even for a number of my friends and clients. I’ve come, however, to understand that these children are truly “on loan.” Bitter and sweet, for sure.
My son, Taylor, is pulling off the lyrics to his favorite songs and finding his voice along the way. Literally and figuratively. I look for every chance to build into him and take advantage of the opportunities that life affords. Miss and I have always placed an extreme value on our children. We just have. We both know the pain that this kind of love brings. It just does. Miss and I want to grow old together and know that someday, Taylor too, will be…
GONE.
In 2020 I see myself with my bride and with a few pups. Taylor will be 25 and on his own. Kristi will be 30, Andrew will be 33, Jordan will be 36. People, places, and priorities will change.
God, how it hurts to just write those thoughts. Moving on…
Capture your vision for 2020. See it with perfect clarity. Make sure you are being “rational” in your thinking and properly valuing your time, talent, and treasures. 2020 is coming. A happy new decade awaits those that understand why they’re pursuing whatever “it” is they’re going after and that understand the people that mean the most to them and their sense of who they are. Remember, another zero in your bank account will mean absolutely “zero” to your happiness. It just won’t.
I know who I’m given to. I know what makes me happy. AND, I know that I’ve got very little control over other people, life’s circumstances, and I’m alright with that too.
In 2020, me and the Miss will be preparing for another trip for the ages. We’ll be heading out on January 12th, 2020 for a trip to Half Moon Bay and a visit with Jordan, Keturah, Tank, and their (additions). We’ll invest some time as well with my one client in San Francisco, a really cool outernet startup that’s come up with a unique way for humans to communicate from brain to brain without speaking.
We will then fly down to LA to hang with Andrew and his posse. Next we’ll head out to Colorado to visit Krits and her family in the Springs. She’ll have some work at home business in swing and be a ball of energy with her little ones too. I’ll have a client there as well and Krits will be helping me help them. We’ll talk work and life and Miss will join the conversation, and in her own way, contribute more than could be imagined. She just does.
We’ll end the trip with a visit to Taylor. Taylor will be living and working at BUILT TO LEAD after a successful college career in both soccer and basketball at the University of Kansas. He’ll be living in Lawrence and we’ll still meet up with Jordan, Andrew, Krits, Miss, and him every year for the KU vs. Misery game. We will always stay at his house after the game to hang out and tell stories, have a cold one, and warm each others hearts. Yea, baby.
2020 is coming.
I can hardly wait…
