Will you…

It’s been five years since I wrote this. Time for a checkin. Time for a change? Please, read on…

We humans are a curious lot.  We, unlike, our mammal cousins, are mostly curious about the future.  We want clarity.  We want control.  We fight for both irrationally. Huh…

Prove it to yourself.  Take a moment and try to quiet your mind.  Take a couple deep breaths and think about this coming decade.  Today it’s 2010, before you know it we’ll be celebrating 2020.  What questions most occupy your mind regarding the next ten years?  Here’s a sampling of a few questions that may be on your mind. Check it out and feel free to “and.”

Will I be healthy?

Will I be happy?

Will I be alone, single, still looking for love?

Will I still be happily married, widowed, or divorced?

Will I have a spouse that knows me, understands me, wants to be my best friend, supports me, takes care of me, and won’t leave me as I get harder and harder to look at?

Will I be able to remember anything?

Will I be able to retire, work less, pay for our children’s college education, and afford that second home?

Will I be employed, will my company still be in business, will I like my boss, and will I be stuck in the same dead end job?

Will I be able to make my mortgage payment?

Will I still have credit card debt?

Will my now adult offspring ever be capable of supporting themselves?

Will I have any real friends that know me, understand me, care about me, call me, move toward me, and love me?

Will my hard work ever pay off?

Will my boss ever give me that long overdue promotion?

Will I be a burden to my children financially?

Will I…

The questions go on and on and on, for as long as we do.  And, yet when we are honest with ourselves we quickly realize that most of them are completely out of our control.  We cannot know if we will be loved, employed, or healthy in the year 2020.  We can’t even control if we’ll still be here.  Yet we find ourselves burning up our brains and our bodies in search of clear answers.  As you and I enter this new decade I would like to propose a change in direction that is counterintuitive.

Here’s the big three I would challenge you to answer first and foremost as you enter this new decade. Don’t put off the deep answering and deep pursuit of these. Most do.  Most humans simply believe that they do not have the time…

1.  What will be your life’s work?  In other words, what will be your magnum OPUS?

2.  Will you risk your heart to really LOVE?  Will you give, give, give or continue to keep score?

3.  What will you do about faith?  Will you discover, cultivate, and challenge your own Worldview?

Would answering these three, provide you with clarity or even eliminate so many of the smaller ones above?

Remember the words of one of my favorite dead Europeans…

“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains:  it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

C.S. Lewis

Are you blowing Him off?

When will you have the time to think?

Why is your mind preoccupied with things that are out of your control?

Tell me more, my friends.

Tell me more?
