The Inn Between

In skimming over a few old blog posts here, I was struck this morning with an insight, and a thought. Both hit me like a ton of bricks.

I thought I’d share them with you to help encourage you, wherever you are on your builder’s journey, and to gain your reaction. Here they are:

1. Many of my blog posts sound so “definite,” as if I have “seen the light” and am scribing the wisdom of the ages. The truth is this: the more I learn, the less I know.

2. There is no destination, at least in this life, on the road to mastery. We are always “in between” our old selves and new; our old organizations and the ones we are dreaming into reality. That’s the definition of a journey.

I guess I’m sharing these thoughts more as a reminder to myself, that the place to avoid is that temptingly cool, dark, closed space of “knowing”–of “having arrived.”

As we journey together, it’s better to stay at The Inn Between.

All of us are in between, whether we know it or not; regardless of whether we like it or not. The road ahead will bring surprises, and new insights, some of which will replace our current convictions.

Does this mean we should give up our convictions and simply go with the flow? No way. Just as bad as “having arrived” is the other extreme of “wandering aimlessly.”

I think the trick is to get a very clear and mostly fixed idea about WHO we are and WHY we’re here and  the vision of  WHERE we’re called (and by whom). And then to set out on that journey with very clear and mostly flexible plans regarding HOW we’ll travel and WHAT we’ll do and WHEN.

Yes. Be especially flexible about WHEN…

The Inn Between is located at the intersection of Order Avenue and Openness Street, just this side of Chaos.

This advice is offered with humility to all our families, friends, and clients who are strong of CORE and on the journey–for themselves individually and their organizations. Keep moving forward.

I hope to see you at The Inn.

  1. Jim,

I’m a client of Chet’s, but I just wanted to thank you so much for this post. I often find myself feeling alone at The Inn Between because everyone around me seems to have it all figured out. But for me, like you, the more I learn the more I question what I ever really knew.

I think I’m going to sear the location of The Inn into my Core so that when I’m standing there, I know I’m right where I’m supposed to be.

AND, if I happen to see you there, the first rounds on me!

    Adios,
    David

  2. Thanks David, for your comment. If the first round’s on you, great. I’m at The Inn Between about every night! Looking forward to perhaps meeting you soon.
