If we live long enough…

Someday, I believe, if you and I live long enough, we will experience the loss of nearly everything.  I’m not attempting to be morbid here, I am, however trying to be realistic.  If you and I live long enough, we will lose our good looks, our thick heads of hair will grow thin, our long strides will shorten, our flexibility will stiffen, and our strong spines will grow weak and begin to curve more dramatically.

If we live long enough, we will bury members of our family, very likely our spouse, and maybe even a child.

If we live long enough, we will lose our ability to conduct the work we’ve come to LOVE or that enabled our other loves.  If we live long enough, we will lose so much that we now hold near and dear.  We will grieve these losses, that is for certain.  Many, however, will go beyond grieving.  Many,  after  countless losses that will gradually and suddenly pick up speed in their velocity and in their frequency, will become despondent, desperate, depressed and lose all sense of hope.  They just will.

I believe that all these losses and all the associated pain is coming my way.  I believe that there is cause for HOPE.  I believe that there is ONE who promises to never leave me, nor forsake me.  I believe that there is ONE who understands me and wants to develop my character at any cost.  I believe that there is ONE who promises to meet me in my pain and carry me to the other side.

Pain is inevitable.  Misery is a choice.

What do you believe?

What is the basis for your belief?

When was the last time you challenged your deepest held beliefs?

AND, God?

God, help me…
