Your character, you choose…

Today one of my clients told me that he was finally changing his reputation at his place of work.  I asked him to tell me more.

He did.  I listened for awhile and then cut him off mid sentence.  I told him to please write down these words.

I canNOT change my reputation.”

He stopped me before he wrote to complain that this simply isn’t true.  I reminded him of a couple rants back about the difference between reputation and character.  Here’s why this is really important for this client and maybe for you.  When we think we can change how others see us, we give others too much power.  We start to pay too much attention to opinion polls and care too much about hearing the goings on behind our back.  This is a recipe for becoming mentally ill.  It just is.  The world will see you the way the world chooses to see you, period.

Your character,  you choose.  You can change your habits, your thoughts, your actions, and your CORE. You can change you.  Focus all your time and energy here and esteem yourself as you build a better you.  This is a recipe for becoming more and more healthy physically, mentally, and spiritually.  It just is…

My client looked at me and told me he got it.  I knew he really did, this time.

Mental Health 101, remember, is all about focusing your time and attention on what you can control.  You can control you.  You can control how you react to your triggers.  You can control how you react to circumstances, people, and adversity.  You canNOT control other people, circumstances, and what others think of you.  Work on becoming more CORE centered and self controlling.  Work on developing a more virtuous character and worry less if anybody notices…

Yea, BABY.

When it hits 2:30 today I’ll be “rubber down” on the road.  AND, I won’t be worried about what the world thinks of my choice.  I just won’t.

Have a great afternoon, my friends.

Have a great afternoon…

  1. Loved this read. Chet at his finest! We can all use this reminder of where to focus energy & effort..thx for sharing it

  2. There’s a part of me that cares what people think and a another part that doesn’t. It’s the part that cares where I notice I have integrity gaps. I’m writing down and gaining clarity from others about my integrity gaps. When I fight hard to close my integrity gaps is when the part of me that cares will go away, because all will be right in my heart. I believe this is the way to living beyond mediocrity, the way to be able to DO more productive action towards my DREAMS and to live to my true potential.

God, help me to close my integrity gaps and live up to the potential you have blessed me with.
