Nosier and noisier…

The world is noisy and getting nosier and noisier by the tweet, the post, and the text.  We are entering a generation of connectors that will be more comfortable digitally than they will be face to face.  In fact, we may already be there.

The problem that is cascading our way like a giant personal tsunami is being missed by most but is very real, ever present, and it’s crushing our performance in thousands of little ways as it sweeps us out to the sea of mediocrity.

We are so caught up in what’s going on with Tiger, Tressel, The Bachelor, Our Teammates, Edwards, and Pryor that we’ve little time left to think about the ONE person we need to really know.  We are hiding behind frequent texts and tweets with our friends but less and less telling them our trials and troubles.  And, even less listening to theirs…

We don’t know our own thoughts, fears, dreams, disciplines, desires.  We don’t know our tendencies that are headed toward a break.  We don’t know ourselves.  And, we don’t know anybody with a strong enough CORE to challenge us to challenge our thinking.

Socrates was right.  Know thyself.

What do you believe about the big questions in life?

What is your big dream?

Why are you here?

What are your biggest fears holding you back?

Who challenges you?

Who knows you?

Who listens?

Who do you TRUST?

Today, practice something really old fashioned and out of style.  Today, practice being present.  Today, practice giving your attention to one person at a time regardless of where you are and who you’re with.

Today, do not allow the digital world to override your meaningfull minutes with another.  Today, invest some time with yourself and your thoughts.  Sure, it will be more depressing than delighting the first few times you discipline yourself to be alone with your thoughts.  It just will.

And, do it anyway.

You’ve been sufficiently challenged.  Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going back to my office to re-read an old fashioned book.  Then I’m going to be with Krits and Tay and they’ll know that they have all my attention.  Assuming that they notice…
