Play your game…

Ants do NOT play. Ants march. Ants “play” follow the leader and do what they’ve been instinctively told to do. Ants don’t need to play to survive.

Lions, however, play a lot. In fact the more sophisticated and strategic the requirements for survival, the more the animal plays. Why? Because playtime is how we learn the strategies necessary for said survival. Funny, we tend to think that as we mature we put away our childish ways, including our need for play. We discover the world of work flush with purpose and meaning or at least filled with ducats, dinero, and dollars, and decide that we’ll make more of that while the sun shines. We STOP playing.

Today, remember, that when you do that, Y.O.U. are fighting your evolutionary wiring and that’s not the one you want. You, remember, are at the top of the food chain and must keep growing and learning if you are to survive and have any chance at thriving. Ants are made to march and follow their very limited hard wirting.

You, not so much. You are an original, made in the image of God. And, created for a life of discovery through a variety of ways,including play. A lifetime of play and work. Play and work that you’ve discovered over years of playing around with what energizes you. Play and work that you cannot distinguish between. Play and work that are fueled with passion and filled with purpose. Deep play that so envelopes you that you find yourself lost in it and stronger when you emerge out the other side.

Today, play a round of golf and feel each shot as the ball leaves the clubhead, hopefully not the hosel. Wrestle in the grass with your dog. If you have the gift of children in your life, throw ’em a ball or play some “scramble,” like Miss and Krits.

Play.

Who knew learning could be so much fun. Who knew?
