Most of my clients quickly come to grips with the enormity and depth to the process of becoming built to lead and of building a built to lead team of builders. Our framework overwhelms and it’s incomplete by design. Imagine how daunting the task would appear if we tried to account for every step. Nobody argues that our process isn’t well thought out, fairly comprehensive, and a little more meaty than most.
However, there are a couple pieces of the process that consistently gets a push. A push back, if you will. In fact these two pieces are met with resistance by most clients early in the process and have caused a number to leave built to lead. Here’s the rub.
At BTL, we believe, that Y.O.U. are your own worst enemy. Period. And, we believe, that Y.O.U. cannot lead others further than Y.O.U. have led yourself. Period. We believe that this is an absolute. And, most normal humans cannot stomach the thought that there are absolutes and absolutely disagree that they are their own enemy, much less the worst!
Normal humans are wired to see other humans and their problems with 20/20 clarity. Normal humans are wired to feel the pain of others problems but only as if it’s their own. This is the opposite of empathy. This is more like noticing what a pain in the ass everybody is. See the difference?
Normal humans think that others are their biggest problem. A better spouse and I’d be good. A better boss wouldn’t suck. A nicer neighbor would be the berries. And, who couldn’t use some sibling that actually sensed when Y.O.U. were in the middle of a shit storm? Normal humans think that their kids, their drugs, their disappointments, their disrespect, their lack of drive, and their always needy hands are the thing keeping them from their own happiness.
The problem, the big one that Y.O.U. and I face everyday, is that we are trying to solve the wrong one. Y.O.U. are your own worst enemy. Until you can face that fact, fall on your knees, and gain strength and confidence as you keep getting up, you will struggle and slowly lose hope. The magic is figuring out that none of us gets out of here without the struggle and figuring out that God wants to help Y.O.U., even when you’ve turned your back like the biggest pain in the ass on the planet.
See why Y.O.U. and I struggle to lead anybody, anywhere? Who tells you the truth about you? What gives you hope in your struggle? Who doesn’t turn their back when you turn yours?
Y.O.U. are your own worst enemy. And, God LOVES Y.O.U. anyway. God, help me understand this truth and not lose hope. God, help me face my own greatest leadership challenge, the challenge of leading me. God, help me…

Today, in Church with Chet, Taylor had an amazing “and” to this rant. He recalled Pastor Rich’s teaching from many Sunday’s ago. It went someething like this…
A group of really smart people were asked to write an essay on “What is wrong with the world.” Most papers were 60-70 pages in length and focused on food, water, and economic equity. One man simply wrote his essay by using 3 words. Taylor recalled this with crystal clarity, I didn’t even remember any of it. Taylor told me the 3 word essay was the one that Rich highlighted. The 3 words were…
“I am wrong.”
Talk about clear, concise, and direct. Thanks, Taylor for teaching me today.
