The damn few…

Today, over a good cup of coffee with a crazy client, I stumbled into an insight that has been seemingly just outa reach but within my grasp all along.  Most of life is like this. We work and we work some more. We practice and we practice some more. We experiment and we experiment some more. Suddenly the chemicals just seem to come together and just as suddenly “its” there. It’s funny how this works. The recipe for penicillin had always been there. However, Fleming, a holiday, and a forgotten petri dish were required before we stumbled into the insight. Funny, huh.

Today, as Sean rinsed his OPUS, it hit me why countless teams have made the decision to STOP practicing with their teams. Here it is. Do not miss this. This could be HUGE.

Teams don’t make the decision to STOP practicing. Leaders do. Leaders that don’t have a vision worth dying for. You see, it doesn’t make sense to practice unless you understand that it’s the only way to find the “damn few.” Practice, it turns out, is a gift that can only be given when the leader is sold out to their big dream. The Spartans practiced because Leonidas believed that freedom required the discipline of the agog.  The Seals practice because their leaders believe that elite fighting teams deserve to know that only the “damn few” will be beside them. Kman practices because he is sold out to building communites that center around his vision and values. Churp the same.  The damn few, it turns out.

The damn few.

So, here’s the latest rinse to the BTL purpose. This is a small rinse, but it changes everything. That’s for you, FM. FM is another one of the damn few and I’m just happy to say that I’m a part of his team too.  The BTL purpose…

“We Awaken, Challenge, and together we Transform a “damn few” individuals, teams, and leaders into ONE. ONE, distinct and deeply connected, that is BUILT TO LEAD.”

Today, another client gained some clarity around his big dream and his eyes and voice told me that real progress is being made. And, clarity came to me. It had been there all along just hiding beneath my lab reports and papers. Back from holiday and suddenly I see the petri dish and the crazy substance growing…

Want more clarity my friend. Practice. Practice. Practice. And, practice some more. Clarity will come. Just not when you expect it…

  1. What if the practices were having an adverse affect on the leader moving towards their vision?

What if the leaders vision requires a certain type of independance from the “damn few” in order to find a few more who are interdependant?

What if the leader wants a different kind of practice to move toward their vision?

    Tell me more…

  2. 1. Practice verbalizing your vision collision in the practice and gaining clarity.
    2. Practice becoming interdependent and comfortable practicing with those that are not.
    3. Practice that kinda practice with discipline.

And, embrace the acute pain and have some fun while doing it. Yea, baby…
