Today, I reminded a handful of clients of the same thing in a handful of different ways. Here’s the reminder that they heard, or so I hope.
You and I are NOT what we think we are, what we hope we are, or what we try to convince the world we are. You and I are what we repeatedly do, as Aristotle put it so many centuries ago. Every day without exception I engage with a family, friend, or client that thinks he is the exception to that rule.
He is a victim you see, and he’s really not a habitual drunk, he’s just going through a tough time and the booze makes it all better. He’s not really a habitual liar, he’s just learned to spin some kinda shit to spare himself and others the real pain of reality. He’s not really a micro-manager either, he’s just not got a team he can trust at the moment. He’s not really a heroin addict, he’s just never felt so free and strong as when he “choose” to bite that Oxycotin pill.
You and I are what we repeatedly do. Want a better version of Y.O.U.? Become a student of yourself. Look in the mirror, ask your truth tellers to “adjust your mirrors,” and start today to build some new habits. You are not the exception to the rule, my friend. And, neither am I. I have some REAL, HARD, WORK ahead of me. I have some building to do…
God, help me have the courage to look in the mirror, ask for help, and wisely work on my own blemishes. God, help me see my shit as clearly as I see everybody elses.
God, help me…

Great post, Chet. If I can back up and just look at my daily actions with no haze of judgement or interpretation, the picture is loud and clear. Its like when I see a picture and don’t recognize myself in the image because I “don’t look that old” or “don’t have a belly like that”…its amazing how our minds can trick us into thinking something we are not…
Thanks-
JW
Thanks JW. Keep showing up and giving courage to those that do the same. Good work, my friend. Good work…
