The enemy…

The competition is over-rated. The market too. The economy matters but not that much. Peace is preferred but many have thrived without ever knowing her. Your strategy is important; your execution moreso.

Your leadership? Priceless.

Today, in your place of commerce remember no leader can take a team farther than he’s traversed. If you lead anything, take this to heart. You and your undisciplined, unprincipled, and inconsistent behaviors are the real enemy to your systems sustained performance. And, if you think you are disciplined, principled, consistent, and good to go; you’ve got an even bigger problem. Please, study some history and STOP simply repeating…

Your leadership can always get better, my friend. Your systems health depends on it.

If you are the head of the system, get comfortable being alone, get comfortable NOT being one of the guys, get comfortable making tough calls, get comfortable repairing, get comfortable delivering bad news, get comfortable with ambiguity, get engaged with paradox, get really good with gray when others only see black and white, and get excited about giving more than receiving. The enemy is getting greedy. The enemy is when you believe it’s your right to take from your team. The enemy is when you push others away from the trough and spread your arms to grab your share. You, my friend, are the real enemy.

All virtuous leaders understand this truth. All virtuous leaders fear themselves and their unbridled appetites. All virtuous leaders develop people and systems around them to protect the system from itself.

Are Y.O.U.?
