Thanks, Coach…

This week I met Coach Ross from Taylor University. We met on a soccer field to watch Taylor (our son, not his team) play. His first question to me was the standard “So, what do you do?” “Build small business owners and CEO’s of private companies into leaders. And, once they are well down that road, build their leadership team into ONE,” I replied without so much as thinking.

His eyes squinted noticeably even through his shades, his lips turned up, and his entire face kinda lit up as if a switch had been flipped. Something like, “That’s awesome man. I love that stuff. I’m always trying to learn more and impart more to my team and school.” And then he popped out a surprise. He asked me if I had read the book, A Failure of Nerve. I about fell over. Are you kidding me. He just spit out my absolute favorite book on leadership.

This week I met Coach Ross. We watched my favorite soccer player in the whole world. We talked about my favorite leadership book. And, I walked away reminded of the fact that it doesn’t matter how many books you’ve read; it matters how many good books you’ve re-read, re-read, re-read, re-read, re-read, and re-read. Good books, you see, are designed to be chewed on, written in, dog-eared, and highlighted over and over and over. You won’t get the essence from the author until at least six reads. Friedman got a fourth rinse this week from me.

Thanks, Coach, for the great question…

  1. Good word Chet. Same is true of the gospel. Over and over and over and over and over and over again is needed to grasp the height, length, width, depth and breadth of God’s love for us in Christ Jesus. Jim Litchfield

  2. St. Bonaventure called it “worrying” the text…like a dog might “worry” a bone until he got to the marrow. I’m on my 5th rinse of The Call by the beer guy.

  3. Freakin’ magic couple ands from Jim 1 & 2. Thanks men. And, those are a couple great reads to rinse and repeat. Thank you both…
