Today, the new kid on the block taught us some good stuff about preconceived notions during practice 42. Today, another client learned a ton about his opus by watching his wife discover hers. And, today, yet another client learned to change his perspective from personal to professional. None of this learning, most likely, means much of anything to you unless you are one of the three I’m rambling on about. Normal.
Your preconceived notions about just about everything are nothing more than that. In other words they are not fact. Most likely they simply reflect your hard wiring, your experiences, or your prejudices or some combo of each. Preconceived notions are not reality, yet most of us act as if they are. Funny, huh.
And, your hearing aint so good either. You don’t hear what people say, do you. You hear histories. You hear what you’ve always heard. You hear what you want to. You hear what you have biased your brain to tune toward…
Today, client number two only heard the negative come out of my mouth the first time. His brain is baised this way. He became pre-occupied with the negative and completely missed the message. I stopped him and asked him to replay what he had heard to validate what I perceived had happened inside his head. As he rewound the tape and played back what “I’d said,” I simply listened for the disconnect. He completely missed my compliment. His experience with me has led him to expect challenge more than compliment.
He got, if you will, exactly what he expected…
That is until I slowed him down. I resent, nearly verbatim, my original message. The second time was pure magic. He heard my compliment and asked the question I was priming him to ask. I returned the volley with another question. He answered it without so much as thinking. He got it. This time, he really got it. We both smiled. Preconceived notions are over-rated. Tuning in like an animal being stalked is under-rated. Tune in a little bit more, my friend. Tune in and try to simply receive what is being sent. This sounds so much easier than it is because tuning in takes mental discipline few discover. And, discovering what you’re missing may be the magic that unlocks your OPUS..
Tune in…
