LKz and the locker room…

LKz will be missed. She is leaving one of my favorite teams by her choice. I wish her all the best in her new venture and am certain she will do well. She is a good egg…

Yesterday, during practice 55, I reminded the team of what history tells us about high performers. High performers, when their time is up on whatever kinda team they are on, miss ONE thing the most. Of course this is not always true, this is simply true more often than not. High performers miss ONE thing the most – most of the time. It’s not what you think, most likely.

High performers miss the locker room.

Here’s why. Of course they miss the competition, the limelight, the glory, and the thrill of victory – just not the most. After tough practices, hard fought victories, or excruciating defeats – the locker room is their place. The locker room is where they receive encouragement, where a teammate picks them up, where a truth teller hits them with tough truth, and where they share laughs and celebrate as ONE. The locker room is where a teammate feels understood, feels accepted, and takes the time to reflect on what just happened. The locker room is where the high performer kinda soaks it all in. The locker room is a special place with special people and searing memories. People miss this place…

The problem with most companies is they do NOT have a locker room. And, they don’t get tired together while trying to get better. All they do is their job. All they do is try to win games. No wonder they get so tired of one another. BTL practices are all about the locker room and getting tired together.

Yesterday, I reminded a team of 14 that we practice in their locker room. I want them to treasure this. I do NOT want them to take it for granted. The times they share together at Goodale and Gramercy early in the morning or late in the day can be their locker room. The time they hang in kman’s office or around the ping pong table can be their locker room. The moments they congregate in their lounge area can be their locker room on Warren. The times they get tired together, generate new ideas together, role play together, shadow together, challenge together, and get even more tired together, can be their special place with special people and searing memories.

LKz will be missed. LKz will miss this locker room…
