Exploit and explore…

Lead anything and you will be challenged by the “and.” Let that thought sink in for a second. Do you realize how much your cranium craves comfort? Your brain does it’s best thinking when it’s given the luxury of one direction, remember. Brains are not meant to multi-task and oscillate from deep to wide. Leaders brains, however, can’t get comfortable simply in the here and now nor can they choose to solely focus on the future. One end of the spectrum leads to a micro manager; the other leads to a dreamer disconnected from his teams reality. Yikes.

Leaders are challenged to exploit and explore.

Leaders are challenged to focus their attention on “the one thing,” that drives their economic engine as Collins so described in his bestseller, Good to Great. Leaders focus their attention and the attention of their system toward the one thing they can master. In this way, leaders, exploit attention inward. They eliminate distractions, cut away the noise and clangor, and challenge their system toward excellence through exploiting tactics that focus all kinda minds in one direction. And, these same leaders, keep one eye on the future. They exploit and explore new markets, new ways of doing what we’ve already done, and new ideas that could be “the next big thing,” before it’s obvious to ALL. Leaders explore. This requires their brain to take it’s focus off the day to day operation and out into no mans land – the future.

Leaders are challenged to exploit and explore.

This will be uncomfortable. You will get lots of headaches. Your brain will rebel toward one direction or another. This is why we provide our leaders with the BTL framework for building inner strength -their CORE. And, at the same time, we help our leaders gain clarity for their futures by building outer strength through the authoring of their OPUS. Leaders gotta exploit and explore. Leaders attention has to be divided. Wise leaders shift from narrow to wide in just the right ratio. There is no one recipe to follow, mindlessly. You, my friend are gonna have to figure it out. We, the BTL band of builders, are here to help.

It is good to be together on this journey of exploiting the here and now. And, it is good exploring new avenues for the future with you. It is good to learn the power of the “and.” Together we improve, my friend. Together we improve…
