Our purpose at BTL is as follows:
“We Awaken, Challenge, and together we Transform a few individuals, teams, and leaders into ONE. ONE, distinct, deeply connected and BTL.” This is why we are here. This is why we practice one on one, one on a few, or even one on many. This is why we study history, study film, study ourselves, our clients, and the systems within which they work and live. This is why we model the way, embrace pain and suffering, and make every attempt to embody truth in LOVE. This is why we repair. This is why we push. This is why we piss people off by simply being who we are and attempting to awaken, challenge, and transform them into who are they are. Truth be told, I’m the only one who really pisses people off. The rest of the band is still too afraid.
Our purpose is to build leaders. Here’s an unintended consequence of our purpose – some people are gonna become leaders as a result of our practice and decide that becoming BTL means they are built to leave, first. Today during practice 62, one such individual announced he was leaving and gave us at least partial credit. Good.
Here is what BTL means in order of meaning it. BTL means built to love, first. I believe humans are designed to love themselves, their work, and their teams. In other words, we’re built to love, love, love. Love, turns out, is our most effective energy source. The conscious building of ones CORE is the recipe for living a life of purpose and passion. You are built to love. Are you?
Secondly BTL means, built to leave. Sometimes when we wake up humans, they realize they don’t love self, love work, or love the teams in work/life. Usually these awakenings are kinda painful as the person looks in the mirror and doesn’t like the reflection they see. Sometimes these enlightened souls decide it’s time for a change, so they make a move. Today, Luke announced he’s leaving. Good.
Finally, BTL means – built to lead. Our aim is to build leaders who don’t want to leave but want to get out front and lead because they are living out their labor of love, their OPUS. These leaders are contagious and worth catching. They love themselves, love their work, and love their teams in work and life. This is our aim. This is why we’re here. We’re in the energy management business. We create souls on fire who burn bright. And, we mostly fail toward our aim. We mostly fail. We mostly fail to build anything that can stand the test of time. Most of our building projects fall down during the first storm, the first test, the first adversity and simply say – forget it. We mostly fail.
The same will be true for you. Embrace this truth. Lead anything, lead anyone, and you are set up to mostly experience failure. Embrace this. And, lead anyway. Leaders, remember, always focus on the few. So, today, look in the mirror and see what you see. Your job, if you consider yourself a leader, is to look for love.
Do you love who you are becoming in work/life? Are you the same regardless the setting?
Do you love your work? Do you invest your workday doing mostly those things you find energizing or depleting?
Do you love your teammates in work and life?
BTL means built to love, sometimes built to leave, and is aimed at building a few who truly are BUILT TO LEAD. Good…

Hello,
I’m Pat and I am a soul on fire! I’m part of Kary Oberbrunner’s tribe. The more I read about BTL, the more I identify with where I am and where I am headed. The more I walk into my purpose, the more clarity I get!
