No ordinary Joe…

Today, a new BTL team began practice. I began the practice the same way we always begin practice one. We read two paragraphs in the 8 Essentials of Leading Teams. We listened to why BTL practices, why we speak and listen BTL style, and how we do it. We listened to why the team of ten are here. We wrote. We spoke and listened to teammates, BTL style. We failed to follow directions. We failed to keep our brains focused on the topic or the teammate in the moment. We failed at being curious. We failed. We learned about the power of our justice threads. Good.

Today, a new BTL team experienced practice one and embraced the confusion and chaos that comes when you don’t know where this is going, what to expect as an outcome, and when it’s gonna end. Today, I was reminded of how much every team wants to practice and how few are given the gift. Today, I got to experience the joy of seeing a new team get curious with one another and with me. Today, I was given the great pleasure of living out my opus with one of my clients who is just catching the fact that he’s been given the gift to live out his. Today, I saw a reluctant leader realize the team likes looking to him. Today, a new team learned a little bit about the power of tuning in like an animal being stalked. We practiced tuning in as teams of three, four, and five. We practiced tuning in and learning how to hold our questions, put them in the back of our mind, and stay present to the one speaking. We learned we’re really good. I mean really good. And, I hope we learned we’ve got a long way to go.

Good is the enemy of great. Practice is the process for getting you there regardless your profession, the endeavor, the size of your band, or the relative experience of your teammates. All transformation teams go from good to great via deep practice. Today, we began. Practice one is now in the books. It was good and far from great. We, however, are on our way. We practice, remember to “Awaken, Challenge, and together transform a few individuals, teams, and leaders into ONE. ONE, distinct, deeply connected and BTL.” Few teams are led by some Joe willing to give them such a gift. Ordinary Joes, you see, just want their team to do more without giving them the gift of practice. This team is different.

They are not led by an ordinary Joe. Good…
