Our worldview at BUILT TO LEAD is not for the masses — it is for the few. Many say they want great lives, but most settle for some average kind of something because they do not want to do the hard work greatness requires.
The Law of the Harvest is “you reap what you sow.” Apart from luck or unethical living for a season, this is a principle which holds true over time. Covey built his “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” around the Law of the Harvest principle.
A related principle is the “Law of Averages.” Instead of the usual application about the highs and lows averaging out over time, I was inspired to a new meaning from watching a video clip by OSU football coach Urban Meyer and attending a talk by the team’s Leadership Coach, Tim Kight.
The first thing a GREAT leader does when they take over a new team is change the culture. Why? Because, great leaders understand another Law of Averages. Average outcomes come from average performance. Average performance comes from a culture that tolerates average.
We have a saying at BUILT TO LEAD “every leader has exactly the team he or she deserves.” Another is “you can’t lead a team any further than you have led yourself.”
Want great outcomes? You won’t get it from average performance. Want great performance? You won’t get it from an average culture. Want a great culture? You won’t get it from staying an average leader.
Great leaders do the real, hard, work to build a strong CORE. And then they challenge their team to do the same – to become truly ONE with them – starting in Practice 1 through Practice 10,000 and beyond. Great leaders and great teammates push each other to do what they CAN because they share a great big dream. And they share a labor of love called OPUS where average is no longer tolerated, because compared to greatness, how cool is that?
Did you push yourself to be great today? If you didn’t, you lost a day, and you don’t have many more days to lose. Sooner or later the Law of Averages has a way of catching up to you when it comes harvest time.

YOU INSPIRED ME JOHNNY!! A great question we all need to be asking ourselves every day…….Did you push yourself to be great today? You’re a great partner and Friend! Excellent writing John!
