Marcus Mumford, lead singer of Mumford & Sons, in the bands new album, Wilder Mind, seems to be playing with more than just a new sound. The track titled, Believe, is especially poignant as, I believe, it speaks to the struggle surrounding a sincere authoring of one’s worldview. Moved to tears by his mum yesterday, I find myself grateful for the seemingly wilder mind of her son. He sounds like he’s struggling for sincerity. I can relate. Maybe you as well.
Our modern culture seems to advise us that not deciding is the wisest course. Float along.
Eric Metaxas, author of Bonhoeffer and most recently the book titled simply Miracles gives some good food for thought around belief. “Everything says that to open ourselves to God is to take a great risk, and it is a risk. But what if the facts say that taking this risk is a far safer bet than not taking the risk? What if swimming to shore to stop floating down the great river along which we have been traveling is a lifesaving action, because the river is getting stronger and faster every second, and eventually we won’t be able to get to shore because the current will be far too powerful and swift, and only then will we hear the roaring waterfall that will destroy us? That is the question.”
How are you answering the big questions of life? Are you putting off such thinking and floating along with popular culture? What do you believe, friend? Thanks Mumford’s for giving us a couple examples of sincere searching. And, thanks son, for sharing some science and miracles with me yesterday, and even in the same sentence. Today, as I look at the sun, I’m going to think about it being 99.8% of the mass in our solar system. I’m going to enjoy the miracle of earth’s perfect relationship to its sun. I’m going to experience awe as I enjoy this warmth. I’m going to gain some much needed perspective on the size of my troubles as I sit in amazement on another spin ’round. Thanks son. Thanks Mumfords. It is good to search and it is good to believe. It is good…
