It’s not what you say that matters, leader. What matters, at least when it comes to communicating with your team, isn’t what you say – it’s what they hear. Your team is filled with hurting humans and we don’t hear well when we’re hurting. Fact. One of my hardest learnings to habituate is leaning in to those hurting around me and listening. Listening without the need to correct the hearing of the hurting. Listening and letting go of the desire to be heard. Hard.
So, leader, when you discover your words are being misunderstood, you might benefit from remembering the first rule around holes – when you’re in one, stop digging. STOP throwing more words on top of a cluttered mind. Sit in and listen. Give the gift. Good. God, help me…
