Yep, Elle Woods from Legally Blonde is the topic du jour. She’s an absurd character who illustrates the power of owning your Identity. I can relate.
In Daniel Coyle’s book The Culture Code, he shared some research that was done on the performance of different groups when challenged to do a simple task. In this case, it was to build a tower out of uncooked spaghetti, tape, string and a marshmallow. Here were the results (on average):
- Business school students: less than 10 inches
- Lawyers: 15 inches
- CEO’s: 22 inches
- Kindergartners: 26 inches
Yep, after several months of testing across the globe, the kindergartners performed best, time and time again. Here’s why: they were not worried about “status management”. The simply just played together. When I read this, my heart skipped a beat because I completely related to the construct of solving problems through play. AND, because of this, I was often made to feel like Elle Woods during my days in the corporate world.
In many ways, we’re all absurd characters if we let ourselves be. Don’t worry about what others may think of you. I’m mean, come on, Elle is a legal blond, I’m a strategic kindergartener. What about you?
