One of my clients likes the idea of being “detached” when dealing with big customers, big CEO’s, big brothers – basically anyone in a “one up position.” I guess when you become detached you forget how much you need this deal, how small you really are, and how BIG the bad wolf really is.
The world of work is full of people trying to detach from outcomes in one meeting, delegate in another, delight under the lights, and bring discipline in doing what the BIG boss demands. Draining.
The BTL recipe is to become the original you already are. Build your CORE. Author your OPUS. PoP it out with incredible discipline. You will become consistent, competent, confident, convicted, and courageous. Energizing.
Your problem, most likely, is you don’t realize you are a coward. Cowards play games. Cowards act detached one minute and domineering the next. Cowards get quiet when Mr. Big walks in the room. Cowards bully in a one up position. Cowards are different depending on where they are and who they’re with. Cowards are everywhere.
A strong CORE informs courage. It takes courage to be who you are. It takes courage to stop being afraid of being afraid. It takes courage to act consistently independent of circumstances. Courage, like anything, begets more courage. We are what we repeatedly do. And, once you get comfortable in your own skin, you’re in perpetual “energy save” mode. You just solved some of your energy management problem. Damn.
God, help me fear you – other humans, not so much. God, help me.
Live hard. Love harder. Courageously…
