Today a strong and vulnerable athlete told us about a MOT (moment of truth) in training. He had the ball and was headed to goal. The only obstacle in his way was the best defender on the team. For a split second, he said, he contemplated taking the risk and taking on the dude. Instead, he played it safe. Normal.
You and I face obstacles everyday. When we view them as threats, we tend to back down and give up. When we see them as challenges, we tend to rise to the occasion and give it a full go.
Today, we challenged our athlete (mentioned above) to be a bit more wild next time he faces the dude one on one. You see, friend, you do not get comfortable being uncomfortable by playing it safe. We get comfortable doing hard things by doing them. Usually kinda shitty at first. However, if we keep taking risks and learning from mistakes, what once had us hesitating, will soon have us licking our chops. Fact.
High performers fail a lot. They take risks. They understand getting better means getting beat on our way to our best. Embrace this. Get ego out of the way. Nobody elite got there by playing it safe. Truth.
Live hard. Love harder. Wilder, please…
