Life is not organized sport. Most of your big plays are not on TV. There is no video review. Most of your big decisions are not made in front of a large audience. Calls made can only be played with, not reviewed. Fact.
Life is most like a pick up game. There are no officials or refs judging if you played by the rules. You must self govern or figure it out amongst those with whom you’re playing. You and your spouse have to figure it out. You and your kids? Same. You and your neighbors? Yup. You and your extended family and friends? FIO (figure it out).
So, yesterday, as I had breakfast practice with a young stud who is figuring it out nicely, we talked about the power of playing with your young children. Some of my best memories and teaching opportunities came while playing “kick the can” with our kids and their friends. I was (most often) the only adult in the game. Was epic fun playing pick up games in our front yard and the yards of our neighbors. Learned a ton about leading. Learned a ton about me. Learned about each of our kids and their friends. Pick up games have become passé in today’s over structured, over managed, and outsourced club/travel teams. Play is undervalued. What a colossal mistake. Life is not organized sport or any other form of formal community.
Life is most like a pick up game. Play with it. Play with ’em. It’s actually quite fun when you do.
Live hard. Love ❤️ harder…
