Deliberate practice…

The 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to mastery is a myth. Mastery takes whatever time it takes. Fact. Some skills take longer. Some not so much. It depends.

Yesterday, I went to the range for the first time in 20+ years to practice by my sorriness. I play golf for fun now. Was once competitive. Now it’s spiritual and mostly a way to decompress. I still love to play great courses and see what I’ve got. Been a member at Muirfield Village for 33 years. What a gift. Since 2008 when I was diagnosed with arthritis in my left hip, I’ve not practiced – only played. My hip is freakin’ magic now. No surgery. Core work and can’t feel a thing. Blessed.

My son, Jordan, is my favorite golfing partner. Lil Jeggie is another one I love to play beside. They both make me want to be better. So, this weekend, upon Jordan’s insistence, I took the GT3 and my sorriness out to MVGC for practice. Yes, I decided to practice. Listened to my son and limited my work to 35 minutes and 35 balls. Was epic. Loved it. Just me. Went right before the OSU game. Had the place to myself. Was spiritual too. Peaceful. Practice. Damn.

You, friend, must practice to master your craft. Golf is my hobby now. This work at BTL is my OPUS. Takes deliberate practice to perfect. A helluva lot more than 10,000 hours. Golf is my reset. Love it. One of my passions. What, friend, are you practicing to the point of mastery? What calms you? What centers your sorriness? You are meant for more. Do not mail it in. Master your craft and listen to your truth tellers. Who knows, you may master a hobby or two along the way. Damn.

Live hard. Love harder…
