Galton got it right…

Was talking with a friend this early am about high performers. He asked me if I still love this work. Spurred a great convo. Here’s the CCD version.

You cannot sustain elite level performance without loving the work and loving the team. Fact. Francis Galton (cousin to Charles Darwin) wrote the first white paper on high performers way back in the day. He described high performers as possessing a “zeal” for the work unseen in others. You don’t burnout when you love what you’re doing. You yearn for more. You cannot wait to get in the gym, on the court, pitch, or even corporate office. You love it.

The Breakers window washer (Seneca) loves creating crystal clear glass. When I told him I wrote a post about him and his work ethic, you could see a Duchenne smile crease his sincere face. He loves his work and the place he performs. He has an unusual zeal for it. He’s great at this job. He’ll be great when promoted too. Leaders, look for this attribute when you hire. Remember, the best leaders “hire for attitude, train for skill.” Thanks, nutcase leader, Herb Kelleher (Southwest Airlines founder).

Live hard. Love harder…
