Look before you leap

When times are hard (or boring) where you work, there’s an easy temptation to look around at competitors and think that X company is running things better, would be more enjoyable, would pay you better, etc. You can see all the flaws of your own company and you’ve grown somewhat immune by that point to recognizing the things that make it special. And of course the reverse is true of company X. You see all the upside, none of the flaws. Normal behavior. Normal behavior is also to test the market, jump, and then a couple years later find yourself in the same boat wondering why you’re once again not happy.

Want a better result? Try a better framework for your decisions. Take a look at your OPUS before you leap. Are you living it out at your current company? If not, what’s missing? Have you done everything in your power to make it a reality? Undoubtedly not. Who do you need to talk to? What initiatives do you want to drive? What team changes is it time to make? If you’ve really done everything (rare) and still can’t live out your O, then time to start looking elsewhere.

If you’ve got an O that really lights you up, you can spend a lifetime chasing it and soaking up the love. The name on the building becomes less important. Chasing and living out your vision is what brings the satisfaction.
