Protect and prepare

Entitlement and dysfunction in a child is largely created by well-intended parents, I believe. From the moment our child is born, we are wired to protect them. Protection is an essential element of great parenting, however only part of the equation. Our job is to both protect AND prepare them. Protecting them often comes naturally – making sure they don’t run into traffic, making sure someone holds the baby’s head properly, etc. The virtue of preparing them is a skill we must learn. Letting them soothe themselves when they skin a knee (and not stopping them from running fast in the first place!), giving them responsibility when it’d be easier to do for them, holding them accountable even when they’re upset at the consequence or you.

Entitlement largely comes when we over-index on the first half of the equation. It’s an overcooked (but well-intended) desire to protect. Learn to lean against that desire at the right time and in the right way. To go a step further – if we truly want to protect them, we must index more and more toward the preparation. We must allow them to learn the skills necessary to protect themselves and to live a life well. How are you preparing your children for the path ahead? How are you preparing yourself to lead them well?
