Surprised…

Today has been “surprising.”  It started when one of my young clients blew me away with his clarity of vision even though his eyes were 7 bells blurry.  The surprises continued as another client showed me his teams “flow” electronically.  Next I was amazed at the surprising clarity from another client that had nothing to do with work.  He got personal with me and we celebrated, in our own way, his good news surprise.  Very cool.

My next surprise came via an iphone to my good, but old one….

Phone that is.

This call came from a member of “The BTL Band,” regarding, of all things, another builder’s desire to join the fun.  Who knew?

Today, as I reflect, has been all about aligning individuals, teams, and leaders and their visions.  AND, it has caused me to reflect and write more about mine.  I’ve written about my vision throughout the 12 and the 8.  I’ve rewritten this, seemingly, hundred of times.  There seems to be no end to my own search for clarity.  That too, I find surprising.

Sooooo, as I was driving home on 315 I found myself rewriting my overarching vision and then trying to tie it to my sense of purpose.  VISION and PURPOSE.  Two words that Larry, my fellow builder, has surprisingly clarified for me.  Once I let him.  Once I allowed him to influence me.  Slowly.  Moving on.

In fact, the opening to the 12 has changed, surprisingly, because of this clarity.  Instead of starting with our Purpose, Passion, and Process.  We now introduce our clients to our PVPP.  Our Passion, Vision, Purpose, and Process.  A word change.  A world of difference.  Thank you, Larry.  Back to 315…

I pulled into a gas station, parked the car, and began to write.  I began another rewrite.  I began to rewrite what covers two pages in the playbooks to a couple sentence here.  I am after clarity that is clear, concise, and direct.  I share it with you now and welcome your thoughts and insights.  This is a work in process as am I. I hope this helps in your rewriting of yours.

BTL Vision:

To become masters in the art of living.  AND, to become masters in the art of building sustainable high performers in work and life.  To grow old, but NOT tired with a band of like minded builders who LOVE becoming BUILT TO LEAD, who LOVE each other, and who LOVE their family, friends, and clients enough to build them to lead.  Our aim is to change the way the world works and lives, one individual, one team, one leader at a time.  AND, to inspire future generations to build “it” even better.

This is where we’re going, our dream state.

BTL Purpose:

We wake up dead people, inspire their builder’s journey, and SERVE as their builders.  We build strong individuals, teams, and leaders that “transform” from labor to OPUS in work and life.  This work produces individuals, teams, and leaders that are “engaged and aligned” in uncommon proportions.  This produces “whole hearted” energy and fuels the individual and collective practice toward MASTERY.  AND, this is the heart of performance.  Together we improve…

This is WHY we are here.

Notice that there are NO numbers and nothing about “taking” or “driving” anything.  There is nothing about  the “next level.”  There is nothing hidden, like our secret desire to “cash out.”  There is a surprisingly liberal use of the word LOVE and a general sense that we’re anything but normal.   AND, the focus is NOT on scaling or making “business sense,” whatever that means.  There is something surprising, to me at least…

The vision clarifies a dream state that inspires.

The purpose defines who we are, and why we’re here.

Are you surprised?

Does this make sense?

Please, tell me more…

Especially “tell me more” BTL Band.  Let’s play in front of our “online” audience and see where this goes.

  1. Chet, it’s late, and I’m heading off to the rack, but a couple of quick thoughts in reaction to your gas station re-VISION:

    1. Cool. Very clear, concise and direct.
    2. Not “scalable” but “sample-able”. Built to Lead is so weird and wonderful we’ve got to enable and allow new clients to experience it in bite-sized samples. Once you get a taste, you’ll want more. Like Lays potato chips…
    3. Regarding the liberal use of the word LOVE, I believe it is the difference-maker, force multiplier, and best-kept-secret in business. It is an idea at least as powerful as building your CORE before trying to lead others. Teams that are allowed to come to know each other through the sometimes messy BTL process can, if conditions are right, come to love each other, and reach a point where everyone on the team is willing to stop and help anyone else who may be struggling. This is a secret of the best teams; the ones that reach magical heights. Superficial “knowledge” of teammates leads to superficial “teams” (“groups”) and mediocre results. We have to amplify that the process of BTL Practice Sessions is designed to create that kind of team.
    4. Good night. Call me re: cool stuff happening at one of my clients that involves cycling!

  2. So I have read and reread the re-Vision and the other builders commentary. I also read and reread the pages in the 12. And I have reflected on my experience with becoming Built to Lead…for nearly 24 hours…

And so as Built to Lead has coached us, I have questions…

What did you say at the Pavilion at Muirfield that FELT so clear, concise and direct? Would you say the same thing now?

What’s holding you back from expressing the vision as “aiming to INSPIRE change in the way the world WORKS and LIVES one individual, one team, one leader at a time”? Or…

At a minimum, should it not be the first thing we hear, see and feel? Is that not the melody line of what all of us have heard, felt and experienced? Isn’t it about the ripples? And isn’t it small and HUGE at the same time?

Does the rest of the vision in the reVISION become part of the Purpose?

Are Laughter and Fun conspicuous in their absence?

I think the use of LOVE is great – it is what makes Built to Lead, but I think it is part of our purpose in fulfilling the Vision. This reVISION is definitely more clear, concise and direct than what is in the 12. And that was clear and direct to start.

My questions are from someone who was not present for any of the specific discussion leading to what is written, but someone who IS much IMPROVED as a product of the Vision.
