Today, we invested another great five hours with a team that is being given the gift of practice. We covered some good ground around building trust. We spoke and listened. We read and wrote. We asked some curious questions. We watched some golf and we “walked the line.”
We ended with a little word from Bono, not Sonny btw 🙂
We ended up with Bono’s leadership thoughts that great leaders “find the melody line.” AND, ” You are only as good as the arguments you get.” Freakin’ magic. Or so I thought. The freakin’ magic was coming I just hadn’t mined for it yet, I guess.
I was feeling really good about the work we had done and gave the team the opportunity to make a “comment” to close us down. I rarely do this. I’m not sure why I did. I am trying to wire every team to make less “commentary” and practice more curious questions. So, this was going against my tendency. I had barely gotten the words out of mouth when Melody delivered her line. She told her leader something that she meant and something that few leaders hear. She thanked him for putting her through another tough practice. Her words were freakin’ Magic. The magic was in her tone, her eyes, and her body language. Always is. Here are her words, as best I recall.
“I think it’s really cool that I have a boss that cares enough about us that he wants this for us. He actually wants us to LOVE our work.”
Melody’s line, not mine.
Melody’s line.
Freakin’ MAGIC in the making…

In The Big Lou, we call this a BFD! Freakin’ magic.
