Pride is the most potent of the 7 deadly sins for a reason – it’s personal and cultural. Every generation suffers from this. Study history and you will see this thread permeating time. Since recorded history the generation currently in power sees clearly the ignorance of their predecessors and doubts the capacity of the coming one. We are not the first generation to think (generally speaking) that the millennials are not going to make it on their own. The greatest generation still doesn’t think us boomers understand how soft and squishy we’ve had it. On and on this will go. The root reason is collective, cultural pride. Generationally we tend to think we’re better than those that came before us and those that came from us. Funny, huh.
Every culture flatters itself thinking it’s finally seeing things clearly that previous generations could not. Every culture thinks it’s the first to discover unmediated and unadulterated truth. We see previous generations blinders and not our own. We see previous generations ideological handicaps and not our own. We see previous generations laughable logic and not our own. We see through a foggy lense and believe we have 20/20 vision. We don’t understand that we suffer from ideological cataracts. Fact. So, friend, build strength within your individual core. Gain clarity about who you are, your deepest held beliefs, why we’re here, and where you’re going. Gain conviction and clarity as you become more the original you in fact are. And, gain humility. You and I are not all knowing. You and I have personal presuppositions and generational ones too. We are all biased to our own. Study history. Explore science. Deepen your faith. And, do it all with humility.
Francis Collins and his team of crazy doc’s discovered the “Language of God,” when they broke the code of our DNA back in day. We thought this would give us answers, instead it’s given us better questions. Study history. Explore science. Deepen your faith. Do it all with humility. I believe that the more I learn the less I know. I believe creation and evolution are true and a whole lot more. I believe someday we will know the truth and the truth will set us free (John 8:32). Someday, but not today. Today we see but a shadowland and catch but a glimpse of eternal glory. Today we need more faith. What do you believe? Good.
Live hard. Love harder (Thanks, Teeks)…
