My client used this phrase in a BTL team practice trying to explain what he didn’t want the culture to be like. Others heard something different. Funny huh? Not really, it’s just the way it is.
Anais Nin said it best, “We don’t hear things how they are, we hear them how we are.” Never forget this when talking to another human. They will most likely not hear you as intended. They will hear you through their lens, experiences, storylines, justice chords, dispositions and many other filters. You will do the same to them.
So if you really want to connect with another, assume less and ask more – be curious. Learn their language, AND, chose your words wisely, they matter too.
