Since I ended last week with a tree analogy, here is another one: What are the roots of the accountability tree?
The most common melody line I hear in practice is the A-word. Sometimes it’s someone calling me a name that begins with A but most of the time it’s about how to create more accountability in their lives and/or with their team.
Here is a worldview of mine: I believe accountability does not work without commitment.
Commitment is at the root of accountability.
So how do you get more commitment? Let’s do a self-assessment.
Look in the mirror and be brutally honest: What is one area of your life where you crave change? Write out: Why are you not more committed to this change? What is a baby step you can commit to in the next 7 days to get some momentum?
Last week I shared a public commitment about how I need to show up better for my boys. It was a conscious decision each day and especially over the weekend to live up to my commitment. In reflecting on the past 7 days, I would say that I was a “Pass” on a pass/fail scale and I plan to carry forward that commitment into the next 7 days.
What’s your commitment for the next 7 days? Write it out, choose a PA, share it with someone. Let’s get some momentum. New habits will form as you feel the benefits of committing to them and accountability eventually takes care of itself.

Great post, Jiggs. W/o commitment, best you can get in terms of accountability is compliance (and only when someone is watching).
