A Decade (part 1)…

In a recent BTL Band practice, we were playing the casual game of “what kind of heat-seeking missile are you?” 

Rachel shared her perspective that she views me as a heat seeking missile identifying and activating people’s OPUS. That sounded cool from my perspective so I am adopting that missile mindset going forward and in turn will be writing OPUS related blogs for a while.

I have a worldview that was in my original CORE in 2016 that I have modified in recent years:  I believe you must stay in the game as it takes a decade to build a career in anything.

This used to be closer to the cliche: I believe we radically overestimate what we can do in a year and radically underestimate what we can accomplish in a decade.

I believe both sentences to be true as I see them, especially as I look back 10 years in my own life to when I wrote these words and shared them in one of my first BTL practices.

Here is the problem – without identifying what mountain we are going to climb; you can’t even find the trail head of the journey and can quickly find yourself in a situation like the 2000s stock market: the lost decade.  Based on the latest lifespan numbers, God willing there are 6-decade long journeys at our disposal once we hit young adult hood at 18 through 78ish to use our time, talent and treasure to make a difference in this world. It sounds short but if you have any decade in front of you, there is still so much time to take a major OPUS swing. 

Ill break down what a decade of OPUS pursuit looks like in next week’s blog so I don’t go over my word count. Write what you are thinking in the meantime…
