Happy families…

Today, during a little practice over lunch, I was asked why some talented people with all the necessary skills to become elite self sabotage instead. I answered my friend with a quote from Leo Tolstoy. “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

Translation. There are millions of reasons why elite talent implodes on itself. To name but a few, some implode because they have too much success, too easily, and too early. Some are simply complacent. Some lazy. Some prefer to party instead of perform. Some are distracted by the bottle, the pot, the pill, the needle, and now more than ever by the easy high know as porn. Some have the body – not the mind. Some have the mind – not the body. Some were born with the silver spoon and it killed their drive. Some were born in poverty and didn’t have the chance to experiment to find greatness – they settled for not being poor (who can blame them). Some lacked resilience. Some lacked a role model. Some followed the wrong model. This list goes on. Remember, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way…

However, the elite share practically the same DNA. Elite performers have crazy talent, ability, will to pain, discipline, and capacity for work. And, when we dig deep inside the elite we see the common root – elite LOVE for whatever it is they’re aimed at mastering. Elite leaders love mastering their craft and love their teams. Elite performers love. This is why at BTL we’re so psycho about our family, friends, and clients authoring their OPUS – their labor of LOVE.

All happy families are alike. Be one…
