Today, I am quite somber as a little (actually quite a lot) Os Guinness has gotten under my skin. It’s been awhile since one of his books grabbed my heart, head, and throat somehow simultaneously. Last Call for Liberty, by Os is not an easy read. It is a worthy one.
After thoroughly enjoying the sobering take on American’s latest generation (iGen) in The Coddling of the American Mind, I’m feeling really blessed by widening my perspective on our progressive possibilities as a people. Don’t get me wrong, both of these reads do not paint a rosy picture for America or our world. However, as C.S. Lewis put forth many moons ago – “If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.”
May I suggest we continue looking for truth, friends.
Read both these babies if you want to have your perspective widened and challenged. You won’t feel coddled. You will be challenged to think. Who knows you may even choose some new PA as a result. God, help me realize that freedoms biggest enemy is not tyranny but freedom itself. All freedom requires restraint and truth. Viktor Frankl was right. We should have built the damn statue of responsibility on the west coast a long time ago. I guess you and I can start building a bit more responsibly within. You and I are still responsible for leading ourselves. You and I are still free to choose to bookend freedom and responsibility. You and I choose. Our choices have consequences.
Truth.
