If I were going to boil down my experience fighting in three major wars with one takeaway, it would be this quote of mine from the book “American Spartan”:
“Relationship building is the weapon; time is the bullet.”
A Green Beret’s main mission is to go to a foreign country and build relationships with the people who live there. I studied that and put it into practice on my deployments.
But when I returned, I didn’t apply that basic lesson to my home life. It was as though I was blind and deaf.
So don’t forget to bring all your people skills back from the office and into your living room.
C’mon, man.
