The second big fear of humankind is of the outsider. Remember, according to Don Brown in his book Human Universals, the second biggest fear, expressed as a need, is the need for community. We want to belong to a team. We want to be known and understood by someone. Yet, a lone we remain. Fear. Fact.
Often these fears and wants collide inside our family and place of work.
We want to have a real relationship with our son or daughter but cannot “relate” to them during their teen years. We want our spouse to transform together yet we cannot face them during their “dry” times. We want our coworkers to be a community of purpose and passion. But struggle when “strangers” join the group. Fear. Fact.
Today a great group of soccer players welcomed five freshmen to their club. Their leaders did a great job inviting them in and practicing 7 good minutes with each. They were diseased and we accepted them in, anyways.
How well does your team welcome the outsider, leader? Trust me, not as well as you think. Most teams live in fear of the diseased. This team loves them. One L of a difference. You?
Live hard. Love ❤️ harder…
