Practice makes perfect is another lie we were told as kids. I practiced golf like crazy growing up and yet my game, especially my swing, is miles from perfect. Here’s why. I practiced swinging a club that was too heavy. I practiced dropping the club at the top, and letting my weight transfer beyond the inside of my right foot. I practiced bad habits with such commitment they became engrained in my muscle memory. I got really good at grooving some really bad swing disciplines. Here’s the truth. Perfect practice makes perfect.
Perfect. We are made to aim at excellence – us at our best individually and collectively. We are made for purpose. When practice aligns with purpose and our passion? Freakin’ magic. We don’t dread this activity even when it’s hard. We’re drawn by love and a longing for that perfect shot, play, or performance.
So, next time your coach or leader tells you that wasn’t good enough, hear her love and belief that better is in you. Let her instruction in. Be coachable. Aim for perfect. Accept fails. Seek feedback. Keep learning and leveling up. Remember, nobody has a perfect swing or perfect anything. The best keep reaching, training, and focusing their mind on progress being made not the miles from the mark. Keep working. And, understand life is a lot like golf – it cannot be won, only played. Keep playing, friend. Perfect.
Live hard. Love harder…
