Today marks our 7th year wedding anniversary. As I walking out the door this morning, our 5-year-old son asked us what season it was when we met? I said spring but my wife, who is always right, corrected me and shared it was a warm winter day instead. All I remember from that day is that we had lunch outside with one of our colleagues whom I’m pretty sure didn’t say a word as her and I couldn’t stop talking to one another. The spark was instantaneous.
Later that week, in Lauren’s first Built to Lead practice, Chet had the leadership team run 7 good minutes with Lauren at the center. Of course, he let that go on for 45 minutes and at some point, for some reason, I asked her what her favorite state was and she responded “Utah”. She likes to remind me that my jaw about hit the floor, which I am sure it did.
A couple of years after that 7 good minutes practice, we were married just outside Moab, Utah. It was just the two of us and our close friend Blake who officiated the ceremony on a small hill in the middle of Castle Valley at the Ida Gulch trailhead. It was the best 30 minutes of my life and the last 7 years has more than lived up to the hype of the vows we exchanged that day in the desert.
The life we are building together is our Magnum OPUS. We had the gift of knowing each other’s CORE and OPUS’s before our first date thanks to months of BTL practice and when the stars aligned, we have been in lockstep ever since toward the life we are building. We are now a family of four and I could not be any more grateful for the highs and few lows of the last 7 years that has led us to this exact day.
I believe a strong marriage is the anchor point for a Magnum OPUS. It’s the critical bridge that connects our work OPUS and personal OPUS and makes a Magnum OPUS even possible. I’m so grateful for the bridge we have built and grateful to be surrounded by bandmates who value and build their marriage with the same lens so we help each other continue to strengthen these bridges through all the seasons of life.
Mastering the art of living is no easy task and marriage is designed to be similar. But man is it worth it.
Cheers to you Lauren and cheers to all of you who read this a take a baby step toward building a stronger bridge with your spouse today.
