Fortune happens to you. Good fortune is the weather being perfect for your birthday party. Unfortunate is layoffs at your company. Little to no control over either.
Tina Seelig (in her book What I Wish I Knew About Luck) argues that luck is the result of the choices we make and the chances we take. And we have a lot more ability to harness luck than we think. Work your ass off to be prepared for the moment. Show up. Take that big shot that scares you a little. Connect. Bump into people. Get off your phone, get the headphones out of your ears, make choices to connect and seek out good things. Luck doesn’t happen sitting alone in a room glued to a screen.
You may have a deeply unfortunate event occur, or even a series of them. You may also be the beneficiary of many fortunate events. Either way the question remains, how will you respond? How can you create some luck today?
