I am pretty sure I received the lowest grade of my entire educational journey in this class called physics, so I am taking a risk even writing about a topic that Kepler, Galileo, and Newton coined and refined but here it goes.
I had the pleasure to run a practice in partnership with a client last week with people who had no idea what Built to Lead is all about. The most important concept I wanted to get across that if we have a dream state that means everything to us, but there just seems to be no time or momentum to bring it to life, we must slow down and focus on the inertia in our lives.
There are two components of inertia that you must be aware of as you consider how to get back on track toward your dream state:
At rest: an object that is not moving will stay unless an outside force makes it move.
In motion: A moving object will keep traveling at the same speed and in a straight line unless an outside force slows it down, speeds it up, or changes its direction.
As I think about OPUS, we need to be constantly analyzing which unified strategies are either A) at rest with no momentum or B) moving us further away from our dream state as opposed to closer to it.
I asked the financial planner in the room what the most powerful force in the universe was and he said “fear”, which was an interesting response. I clarified my question to ask what the most powerful force in the financial world is: “compounding interest” immediately came out.
Your unified strategies are designed to fuel your progress towards OPUS. Compounding interest will NEVER kick in if you are not prioritizing them in your schedule. You are stuck and delaying your progress for another day.
If your unified strategies are in motion and creating compounding interest in the wrong direction, you MUST intervene.
Spend 5 minutes and look at your last few weeks. Where are your unified strategies at rest that need a kick into gear? Where are your unified strategies pulling you in the wrong direction and need intervention? Choose a productive action to get the inertia aligned in your life.

Mike, this message speaks to me and my Wife. We just discussed this very topic this week. We are both 70 and very active with travel, adventure, nature and our grandchildren. We live fully. We resist the thought of growing old. And so we move, we believe that ‘movement is medicine’. Our strength is now becoming our new weakness. We must relearn to breathe, meditate and slow down.
Sounds easy ? It’s not. And so thank you for the reminder. We will establish this discipline. Good message. Thank you.
