Betrayal stings. Facts. Building oneness, building anything, requires building a little dangerously. It requires baring your heart and soul. It requires extending yourself in service of another and a bigger aim. And occasionally that will bite you.
A team I work with is dealing with this in real time. We unpacked the betrayal. Whose fault was it? Doesn’t matter. When a teammate stops giving truth, the essence of the team begins to break down. This is happening all the time, by the way. The leader’s job is to get them to speak more truth, and when they stop, to ferret it out and do something about it. This team was in the process of that when one team member opted out in a disruptive way. Good. Your team is stronger for it in the long term, even as you struggle more in the short term.
This will be a hard time for this team. Facts. This will also be an opportunity. Facts. Lean into finding the opportunities. Opportunity to learn to better delegate. Opportunity to slow down in the storm. Opportunity to perhaps level up another teammate who is ready for more challenges . Opportunity to clarify your priorities. Opportunities abound. Slow down so you can see and then act on them. Slow down for clarity. Get through this time together and let it build the team into a stronger unit. The obstacle is the way, after all.
