“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to The Lord. But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your Yes be Yes and your No, No. For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” Matthew 5:33-37.
Today, after listening to my client tell me the story of his stream of incessant conversations with countless leaders around his place of work, I was reminded how tiresome corporate chatter. Jesus’ teaching was ccd magic for leaders. Stop using all kinda words and swearing on top of all kinda symbols. Tell the truth. Yes, No, and I don’t know, are the ccd arsenal of a strong leader. Good?
If you find yourself using too many words and dancing around what you know is right, remember Matthew 5:37 and let your yes be yes; your no, no. As my young intern is learning, you will save yourself lots of time and your team lots of confusion. Nothing stops incessant corporate chatter like the unvarnished truth. And, nobody said leading anything was easy.
Lead, anyway…
