2015 resolve…

Happy New Year, my friends. I’m beginning 2015 the way I finished 14 – studying, learning, and applying what makes and sustains high performers. I’m insatiably curious about this topic and can’t cram enough into this little cranium. I love breaking it down so I can use it to build me and my clients UP. Good. My current read is titled, Faster, Higher, Stronger, by Mark McClusky. This baby is all about sports science and there’s tons to be extrapolated beyond sport to your work and life. Here’s a taste.

You can do more than you think.

Genius. Common sense, huh. Science can now prove this point. Good. Of course this, on it’s own, changes not a thing. You see we know all kinda common sensical things and fail to make them common practice. The magic is in making common sense common practice. So, if we make it common practice to do more than we think we can what will happen? According to scientific evidence all over the place, the outcome is predictable – we’ll go faster, rise higher, and become stronger. So why don’t we?

There’s a myriad of reasons but they boil down to one root. Cause it hurts acutely. Cause it really hurts to do one more rep, make one more call, read one more book, practice one more 7 good minutes, tune in like an animal being stalked to an angry asshole, and whatever other adversity simply stares you down and dares you to do it, anyway. The root reason so few reach elite status is cause so few have increased their tolerance for acute pain. Have you?

Wanna better 2015? Resolve to put yourself in more acute pain. Resolve to embrace it. Resolve to surround yourself with some tougher than you and ask them to make you do what you can. And, don’t forget nothing keeps you and I going like a really clear OPUS of our own authoring. And, nothing can replace your strong CORE for keeping you and your PA on track. Are you building here, friend?

This morning Grappy told me he could take us to 60 up/downs as we six melted together down the final stretch of our 60 minute 3P festivus. His eyes were sideways, his mouth swollen from 20 plus stiches, but his resolve steely. I told him to take us to 62, anyway. And, he did. Blondie followed suit and inspired me to do likewise. jmo took us home to 107. Good. It is good to have a team make each other do what they can.

Happy New Year, friend. Go get yourself a big dream, some tough teammates, and get ready to kick your own. Now, back to my book and Go Bucks. Kick a little Bama butt tonight and de-feather a few Hawkeyes this Sunday on the matt. I’m sure it will hurt but the good news is it won’t hurt for long. Acute pain never does but the chronic pain can and will if you succomb to it. Good…

  1. Great post and reminder that resolve is not enough. Together We Improve. This year, re-SOLVE. Re-SOLUTIONS are what you want and need in your thinking to practice and produce truly sustainable Deep Change.
