Useful tyrant…

Most days in this work called BTL, I’m given the opportunity to praise performance and offer helpful and oftentimes hurtful feedback. I do not enjoy the hurtful piece. Many of my clients have a hard time accepting this fact. They think I kinda enjoy putting the hurt on them. I do not. I hurt with the aim of helping. Sometimes I miss the mark and it just hurts ‘ em. This hurts me the most, as it should…

Today, I hit a couple clients with some helpful feedback they had a hard time hearing. It was helpful to them and me to remind them of a classic Clive (C.S. Lewis) quote to help the medicine go down, if you will. “Of all the tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. Those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

We could use a few more leaders with the nerve to offer a never ending dose of helpful feedback regardless how much it hurts to hear. We could use a few leaders willing to deal with the acute pain that comes with attempting to hit and hug in just the right ratio. God, help me get this right and God help me not be afraid of being wrong. God, help me sincerely exercise my clients for their own good, not mine. God, help me be that kinda useful tyrant. God, help me…
