I guess we can pretty much agree on the notion that life is hard. You and I will know we’ve made some semblance of peace when we begin to find joy in doing hard things well. You can do what is easy now, and life will eventually get hard. You can do what is hard now, and eventually life will get easier – eventually you will learn to do hard things well. Pain is inevitable. Misery is a choice.
Last night, during our Porch Church, we realized that the great religions and philosophies share at least one thing in common – this life is struggle. A good worldview rinse for me has been to practice gratitude in all the moments between the struggles (I’m still too soft to be thankful for the unchosen suffering). As I’ve begun to slowly build this discipline, it’s amazing how much time there is between the big struggles, at least in my world. Instead of screaming, “Why me, God,” when the inevitable struggle comes, I’m learning to say, “Thanks, God, for the gift of getting up this morning, walking out on my driveway and greeting my crazy friends at the crack of dawn.”
Today we enjoyed the camaraderie of suffering. We chose this. Good…
