Better angels of our nature…

Leaders ultimately have two choices when it comes to influencing their team – fear or love. Fear works for a season. Love for a lifetime. So, why do we see so many fear based examples and seemingly so few love cats? Because fear fits our survival wiring and most individuals, teams, and leaders feel like they’re fighting for life. Trump wants to take us back to greatness. Study history, friend. Greatness is not achieved going backwards. Greatness requires that we go forward, take the road less traveled, pull more people along, and widen the road as we walk upon it. Greatness requires a love for justice, inclusion, freedom, responsibility, and the stuff of hope for a better tomorrow. Greatness requires that we keep going forward even though we understand this takes us further from what is known, comfortable, and visible. Vision over visibility, huh Bono.

We need you, leader, to give us hope not continue to fill us with more fear.

So, friend/leader, remember that America has been here before. All is not lost. We’ve been through great divides our entire existence. Our soul, as a people, is filled with hope. We have reason to believe. We’ve seen so much progress since we were once pilgrims. Focus here, leader. Study the history of hope. It might help to remember a little something something from our sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln. Here’s a snippet from his first inaugural address back in 1861. We were a house divided, you may recall. Deeply divided. Here’s what he said to fill us with hope.

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

We need leaders inspired by the better angels of their nature, to help us listen to the better angels of our own. The better angels bring life and hope to even the most weary of souls. I guess you could say we need leaders with soul. Leading with soul, filled with hope, touched by the better angels of our nature – Be one…
