What CHOICE will you make?

I shared a video the other day referencing a few insights that Coach Nick Saban, (Alabama Football Coach) offered as to how you motivate and challenge some of the best athletes in the country each year……..

“We have about five choices in our life.  

We can be bad at what we do.

We can be average at what we do.  

We can be good at what we do, which probably is God’s expectation

for whatever ability He gave us,

Or we can be #excellent, or we can be #elite.

And everybody has a choice as to what they want to do and how they want to do that, but if you’re going to be excellent or elite you got to do special things. 

You have to have special intensity.  

You have to have special focus. 

You have to have a special commitment

and drive and passion to do things 

at a high level and a high standard all of the time.

It doesn’t matter what God-given ability that you have; that, probably, can make you good. But without the rest of it, I’m not sure you ever get excellent or elite, and that’s the part we’re trying to get to.”

 When I read this I did my own gut check and I started to evaluate the choice I have made for myself.  I can say for sure, without question that I want to gain Mastery, I want to be Excellent, and YES, I would like to be an Elite Builder of Leaders! I am committed, I have the desire and I have defined certain disciplines that have me on the right road but man do I have work to do!

The 4thEssential in our Playbook of the 12 Essentials is “Build Your Discipline”. This is all about accepting responsibility for ourselves and the choices we make in our lives……our choices have consequences as we all know. One of the practices or disciplines that we recommend to clients to build their discipline is the following

Six Days a Week

  • 60 minutes of exercise
  • 40 minutes of reading
  • 20 minutes of reflecting /thinking

Nobody has to tell me to exercise; I love to exercise, to sweat and the great feeling of a good workout. What I have identified that I can certainly improve on is the intensity and focus of my workouts. I won’t bore you with all the little details or nuances as to what I need to improve but one thing is clear, I am NOT doing enough of those special things to reach my full potential as an Athlete and a Builder of Leaders.

I weigh 235 lbs. and I gripe and whine all day about not being able to reachmy desired goal of 225 Lbs. Why? Simple, I always drink that next beer, glass of wine or dessert. I am lacking discipline, focus and the intensity of a bigger dream for myself. Another words, I am not doing enough of those special things that Coach Saban was talking about earlier to be excellent and maybe even Elite.

  • Are you striving for excellence in your life?
  • Do you even think about what being Elite would look like for you?
  • What are your Big Dreams and are they providing the fuel to get you through the ups and downs of life? Those dark moments when it’s easy to quit, slack off and lose focus and intensity of effort.
