I am often asked by clients or individuals who think they want coaching; can a person really change, can someone really make dramatic positive changes in their life and sustain those changes for the long term and my answer is always the same, it’s a mind-set, how badly do you want to change and are you willing to do the hard work to make it happen.
If you like me have an intense interest in human performance, habit development, personal growth and mastering that negative internal voice, you will be fascinated by David Goggins, Can’t Hurt Me
I will warn you, the language in the book is raw, the story of this Navy Seal Warrior is crazier than shit and you will have a new understanding of human endurance and a better understanding what Goggins calls the “Quitting Mind”, that unchecked fear that unleashes all that doubt, anxiety, worry and mental exhaustion that stands in the way of reaching your full potential in life!
This story is an extreme example of how one man failed in his early years academically, physically, and mentally and in his personal relationships. He was brutally beaten by his Father and was forced to watch his Father brutally beat his mother. Finally one night David and his Mother were able to escape this brutal environment
This know doubt is a very extreme case of how one man who in his own words describes his life, “When depression smothers you, it blots out all the light and leaves you with nothing to cling onto for hope! All you see is negativity!”
Finally, sick of being sick, sick of failing, sick of an aimless life he found a way to feed off that depression, anxiety, worry, self-doubt and convince himself there had to be a better way to live and in that simple but profound thought, he found a purpose, a mission that would be his first step in a very long journey of pain, failing, hours and hours of hard work and incredible feats of human endurance and achieving his big dreams.
A few of his accomplishments:
• The only man in history to complete Elite training as a Navy Seal, Army Ranger Training, Air force Tactical Air Controller
• Ultra Endurance Runner (100 mile races)
• Guinness record holder for 4,030 Pull Ups
I can’t believe it took me so long to read this book and I thank Chet and Mike for the recommendation! As David Goggins would say, “two men who personify the human equivalent of the hardest sharpest sword you can imagine. They find a way to adapt and overcome obstacles that would defeat most men.”
There is always more to learn and this story is a great addition to what men and women can achieve when you make up your mind to do so and your willing to do the hard work that any change requires!
• Nothing is impossible the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!
• Progress is impossible without change; and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.
